At Pont Steffan we understand that occasionally people don't like the appearance of their wrinkles and would like a way to reduce them. Lines and wrinkles are absolutely normal, completely natural and often caused by repeated facial muscle contractions. These vary from frowning, squinting, smiling and laughing, but after a lifetime of a life well lived some patients want to turn back the clock on these.

Causes of Wrinkles

Smiling and Laughing
We don't want to discourage smiling and laughing of course! But along with other emotions, over time they can cause crow's feet but we prefer the term 'laughter lines'.
Sun Damage
The sun can cause wrinkles if you are exposed for long periods of time. It is the UV radiation that can damage the DNA in your skin and causing the skin to age and become less elastic.
Smoking
People who smoke are more likely to develop lines and wrinkles much earlier. Mostly commonly lines will appear around the mouth from the repeated motion of 'puckering up'.

How Does It Work?

Dr Gareth Rhidian has undergone additional clinical training to become a legally authorised prescriber of anti-wrinkle treatments and dermal fillers.

Botulinum toxin and fillers can be used as a non-surgical cosmetic treatment of facial lines, and the rejuvenation of skin and underlying tissues. It works by stopping the transmission of nerve impulses to the facial muscles that contract and cause wrinkles, such as frown-lines between the eyebrows and crows feet around the eyes. Botulinum toxin is injected into specific areas of the muscles that cause lines and wrinkles. It will temporarily relax muscle activity in treated areas which then reduces the appearance of lines and wrinkles, giving you a more relaxed and youthful look. You may begin to notice visible smoothing within 24 to 48 hours for moderate to severe lines.

Treatment doesn’t take long to complete and usually requires very little to no recovery at all, so you’ll be able to go about your regular routine immediately after treatment.

Facial Aesthetics FAQs

Does it hurt?

Patients have said that they feel some slight discomfort like a sting or pinch. Fine needles are used to help minimise any discomfort.

Will I still have expression?

Administering botulinum toxin is technique-sensitive and when treated by someone that is licensed and undergone the relevant training in facial anatomy, you shouldn't lose the ability to show expressions after treatment.

How many injections will I have?

This will vary depending on which area(s) you are having treated. If you are having treatment for crow's feet you will typically receive 3 injections for each eye. If you are having frown lines treatment, you will have 5 injections.

Are there side effects?

As with most prescription only medications there are possible side effects. There is a risk of bruising, redness, slight discomfort and swelling at the injection sites. Other possible side effects include: dry mouth; discomfort or pain at the injection site; tiredness; headache; neck pain; eye problems: double vision, blurred vision, decreased eyesight and dry eyes; and allergic reactions.

Who can perform this treatment?

As this is a prescription only medication, only a doctor or independent nurse prescriber can administer this type of medication. Dr Rhidian has undergone clinical training to be able to safely and legally perform this treatment.

How long does treatment take?

After your consultation the treatment will be booked, the actual treatment is quite quick and will take around 10 minutes.
